Is Roblox Putting Children at Risk of Predators?

Most parents trust Roblox to be a safe gaming platform, but lawsuits say otherwise. Despite promising child protection, the company faces mounting allegations of failing to stop predators.

By 2023, Roblox reported over 13,000 sextortion cases to child safety authorities. In the first half of 2024 alone, law enforcement requests surged 33%—yet predators still thrive on the platform. Through chat, avatars, and hidden game interactions, they exploit young players.

Lawsuits claim Roblox isn’t doing enough. Kids as young as six encounter virtual strip clubs, explicit content, and manipulative predators. Many parents believe the platform is monitored, but disturbing content and dangerous users continue to slip through.

This isn’t just a game—it’s a serious risk to children’s safety.

Doesn’t Roblox Have Safeguards in Place?

Roblox claims to use advanced AI chatbots and 3,000 human moderators to monitor 50,000 private chats per second. The company insists its filtering system is designed to keep children safe.

But according to critics, these so-called protections are failing. Ben Simon, known online as Ruben Sim, has exposed serious flaws, calling Roblox’s moderation a joke. Harmless messages get flagged, while dangerous and predatory conversations continue unchecked.

For parents, that means one thing: your child isn’t as safe as you think.

In contrast, TikTok has three times the daily active users of Roblox and employs 40,000 human moderators to monitor chat activity—more than ten times the number Roblox relies on.

Roblox puts more time, effort, and money into convincing parents their platform is safe than actually protecting children," said Ben Simon, an independent researcher who tried to get the company to ban a convicted pedophile

What Is the Roblox Sexual Abuse Lawsuit About?

Parents are taking legal action against Roblox for failing to protect children from sexual exploitation and financial abuse.

In October 2022, a California family filed the first sextortion-related lawsuit against Roblox, alleging the platform allowed their daughter to be sexually and financially exploited for months.

Another proposed lawsuit argues that Roblox is “built on the exploitation of children,” claiming the platform’s lack of safety measures led to children being exposed to adult content, online grooming, and excessive spending on in-game currency (Robux).

“It’s the Wild West,” said Alexandra Walsh, founder of Walsh Law Firm and a lead attorney in a California class action lawsuit. “It is unregulated, inappropriately monitored, and it needs to change.”
